Minister of Health: Family Planning program fails

Batam (ANTARA News) - Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Nafisa Mboi assess the family planning program has failed, because the fertility rate in Indonesia has not decreased as expected.

"At around 2012 the fertility rate in Indonesia of 2.6 and that number still survive until today. Means planning programs in the last 10 years failed," said Minister of Health after the opening of the Provincial Health Work Meeting 2013 in Batam Riau Islands, on Tuesday.

He said in 2014 should have a fertility rate in Indonesia is 2.1 according to the MDG's.

"The trend is now likely to go down instead of marriage. More and more teens have taken 20 years to have sex and marriage due to promiscuity," he said.

He further said that early marriage is common in rural areas, while in urban areas are not so high.

"The age of early marriage in Indonesia also increases the risk of maternal mortality has not been perfect because of reproductive completely," said the Minister.

Chief Representative BKKBN Kepri, Marsudi Bambang said the fertility rate in the Riau Islands still stands at 2.6.

"Today the figure is still 2.6. At Kepri many young people who came to stand at work and married. So high fertility rate," he said.

Earlier, the Acting Head of the National Population and Family Agency (BKKBN) Alimoeso Sudibyo said it will continue to drive an increase in the age limit of marriage for women from 16 years to 18 years.

With the marriage age limit been increased, the rights of women and children can be met.

"We want to raise the level of women by providing opportunities in order to improve quality by increasing the age of marriage," said Sudibyo.
